Unified Insulation Systems is a full-service insulation and weatherization provider of energy and cost efficiencies for commercial and residential construction. It first began in 2009 as Unified Comfort Systems where it was solely a weatherization company that worked with government agencies to weatherize low income homes. Unified Comfort Systems slowly grew into the retail market and began doing more than homes because of referrals. In 2016, the company expanded, to start an insulation division that met the demands of new residential and commercial construction. In 2017, the company was reorganized, and the named was changed to Unified Insulation Systems. Catching more attention and gaining more recognition, UIS has grown into 25+ employees.

Our work often begins while the residence or addition is still being designed, going over blueprints and identifying spots where more or less insulation and air sealing may be needed. In the case of an existing structure, we send project estimators who will go over any spots that are damaged or may be in need of an upgrade. Project estimators use a combination of industry expertise and software to provide the most accurate quotes for weatherization and insulation in both new and existing construction. As mentioned above, these teams are armed with thermal cameras to show homeowners just where any weak spots in their insulation are located.
An energy audit will show how much outside air is able to enter the home
The Energy Audit will tell us how much outside air is flowing into your home, and allow us to identify spots that require air sealing and weatherization. The energy audit is able to tell how much outside air is flowing into the home with a blower door test. This test will depressurize the home and force air in from all of the cracks and gaps. A technician then uses software to determine the amount of air able to flow into the home via air gaps.
**We should mention that not only air can get in through these air gaps, but also bugs, pollen, and dirt can enter the home via these passages. It is beneficial to seal air gaps to prevent all of these from entering the home**
Duct testing and sealing is done in the same manner as a blower door test, a calibrated fan is attached to the duct to depressurize it and force air in from every nook and cranny, which allows us to know how well sealed a duct may be.
Once it is know how well sealed a residence is, a RES Check will determine the overall heat loss of a home and to determine that it meets compliance with state energy codes.
"The REScheck product group makes it fast and easy for builders, designers, and contractors to determine whether new homes, additions, and alterations meet the requirements of the IECC or a number of state energy codes. REScheck also simplifies compliance determinations for building officials, plan checkers, and inspectors by allowing them to quickly determine if a low-rise residence meets the code." - Energycodes.gov
Armed with knowledge from the blower door test, the duct test, and the RES Check, our team can get to work with insulation, weatherization, and air sealing. Using the latest in insulation technology, we insulate your home with the best insulation and best techniques to beat cold Ohio winters.
Energy Audits are not required for most insulation-only jobs, this is optional and was previously part of a free program being offered. If another program begins, you can be sure to find information about it on our site!
Unified Insulation offers blower door testing!
A blower door test will find weak spots in your home where energy is being lost! This video shows a tightly sealed home compared to a very drafty home. Know where your home is vulnerable to air gaps and stop the problem!
That is a blower door test in action! It will show just how much air is entering, and how much is being lost via air gaps
A technician will use a calibrated fan attached to a computer and run software diagnostics to determine the air pressure indoors. This test is optional and does not need to be performed before we insulate a home. In the case of much older homes, this test is recommended to assist in sealing air gaps left over from when the home was constructed.

With the optional Blower Door Test completed, we're ready to insulate, weatherize, and air seal the home
The location of the insulation will be one of the main determining factors for the type of insulation we can use. Probably the second most important factor is if the insulation will be placed onto an outward facing wall or an inner wall. Outer walls in our climate require the use of either a vapor barrier, or an insulation that does not absorb water in any way.
What types of insulation and services do Unified Insulation Systems provide?
- We're glad you asked!
UIS provides all kinds of insulation and weatherization services, some that you may not have heard of, for any sized Home, Attic, Basement, or Garage you may have! We work in residential spaces, ensuring that air gaps are sealed, the building is weatherized, and the insulation is fit for rough NE Ohio winters.
We also remove old and failing insulation as part of our services to you! Poor and failing insulation is not doing the job that it is intended to do, and is effecting the amount of energy it takes to keep your house comfortable. Visually inspect your insulation if you're able to every 2 years and after major weather events.
Cellulose - Made from over 80% recycled materials, cellulose is the most Eco-Friendly and Green insulation option and is our most popular insulation material.
Check out some projects where we applied loose-fill cellulose insulation
⦁ Always comes as a loose fill insulation, can be densely packed into sidewalls at 3.5lbs per square foot to achieve higher insulating abilities
⦁ Loose Fill has an R-value of 3.5 per Inch, while dense-pack cellulose has an R- Value of 4 per inch
⦁ Excellent for Sidewalls, Attics, and Attic Eaves (parts where the roof overhangs the home)
Jeremiah has something to say about Cellulose Insulation

Fiberglass - Comes in two forms, as a blanket batt or as a loose fill type and Unified Insulation Systems offers both. Fiberglass has a wide range of thickness to provide suitable R-value wherever your home is located. See some of our projects where we used Fiberglass Insulation
⦁ Fiberglass is made from superheated and spun fibers of glass (sort of like a massive cotton candy machine for insulation)
⦁ Blanket batts are long sheets or rolls of pink fiberglass, and are common in basements and attics. They are pre-cut to specific widths to fit between studs
⦁ Loose fill fiberglass is used mainly in attic spaces. It
should completely cover and hide the rafters to be sufficient for NE Ohio. You can do a visual check of this yourself to see if you have enough!
⦁ Fiberglass can come pre-installed with a vapor barrier on one side to stop outside vapors from entering the home or building, used when the fiberglass will be installed against an outer wall.
Weatherization - Weatherization is a series of processes designed to protect a home or building's interior from outside elements, they seal air gaps and help keep energy inside the home. See some more of our Residential Weatherization Projects here
⦁ Also called winterization or weatherproofing, it is a blanket term for many different techniques including; insulation, moisture control, and air sealing all for protection from the outdoors.
⦁ Weatherization is a much needed upgrade for a drafty home that is not well sealed against the outdoors,
particularly homes made around or before the 1970s
⦁ Proper weatherization will save the owner money every month on energy bills, by using less energy, and keep the indoor occupants more comfortable all year round.
Block Foam - UIS uses Core Foam: Masonry Foam Insulation, a more environmentally friendly type of block foam insulation. This block foam has an R-value of 5 per inch. See some of our projects using Block Foam
⦁ Block Foam is proven to eliminate drafts by fully sealing air gaps
⦁ Has been estimated to cut the energy costs in half for buildings equipped with this block foam
⦁ Prevents moisture, condensation and mildew
⦁ Because it is a foam insulation, it will muffle outside noises

Spray Foam - Has amazing air sealing abilities, and comes in two forms. This insulation is a the result of a chemical reaction that causes foam to expand, trapping air and providing incredible insulation
⦁ Close cell spray foam does not greatly expand and provides a value of R7 per inch
⦁ Closed cell spray foam does not require a vapor barrier and is excellent for use in crawlspaces and basement rim joists

House Wrap - is a large roll of lightweight material that is wrapped around the home, apartment, or office building, and then sealed with a special tape, to prevent water from entering. Check out some Unified Insulation Systems Indoor Moisture Control and Ventilation Solutions
⦁ When installed correctly by experts at UIS, with the seams and edges sealed, and no rips, house wrap also acts as an air barrier preventing drafts inside
⦁ House wraps will also prevent unseen mold damage from forming behind the facade if water is not able to enter into the structure
⦁ House wraps allow vapor to pass through them, called vapor-permeability, because homes need to vent excess humidity outside.
⦁ House wrap is not necessarily used exclusively on houses, it is just referred to as 'house' wrap.
Vapor Barriers - used for moisture control in a home, garage, or addition. Vapor Retarders, aka Vapor Barriers, seek to stop the diffusion of water vapor into the home. Check out some UIS Indoors Moisture Control and Ventilation Solutions
⦁ Vapor retarders are not used in all climates and construction types. In Ohio, we need them
⦁ They are found on outer facing walls when used
⦁ There are several categories of vapor retarder, measured by permeability, or 'perms'.
Air Sealing - can be accomplished with anything that blocks the flow of air, whether insulation, special tape, gypsum board (drywall), caulking/sealants, foam, and even more. Many weatherization techniques are forms of air sealing, see some here
⦁ Can be done in many phases and locations, unlike a vapor barrier where only one is ever installed into a specific spot
⦁ A blower door test will test the air sealing present in the home or building currently.
⦁ Air sealing seeks to reduce the amount of Air Changes per Hour, or ACH. The house needs some air circulation, but the goal is about 4 ACH in a home
Failing and Damaged Insulation Removal - Insulation damaged is not performing up to the standards that it should be, and is costing you extra in energy bills each month. See a couple of spaces where the insulation sustained damage and needed to be replaced
⦁ Insulation that is moldy, falling away from the walls, or not uniformly spread out is doing you a disservice
⦁ Moldy insulation can irritate the lungs and cause allergies in people with health issues and those more sensitive to their environment.
If you suspect that your house or other property is not sufficiently Weatherized and Insulated, its time to give Unified Insulation Systems a call for a free inspection and quote to see exactly where you are with your insulation and where you could be. Our project estimators will further explain the importance of weatherizing and insulating, the benefits of doing so, and how quickly you will begin to see the results.
