Canton is home to The Pro Football Hall of Fame, and is known as the 'Birthplace of American Pro Football'. It also boasts the William McKinley Monument, Library of the 25th American President William McKinley. Canton is a quickly growing city of nearly 70,000 people and it contains a mixture of older homes and new construction.
At Unified Insulation Systems, we know for a fact that older homes are particularly vulnerable to air gaps, insufficient insulation, or no insulation at all. With the City of Canton sitting right in the middle of the Snow Belt, these older homes, and the residents inside, are taking the brunt of mother nature and could have very little protection against it! UIS wants to equip you home with our insulation and weatherization systems, so that you have protection year round and for decades to come.

Insulation is proven to save energy
A 2016 study by The Boston University School of Public Health concluded that if home insulation across the US were brought up to 2012 IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) standards, energy use would be cut by 37 BILLION kilowatt hours! The potential energy savings are eye-watering! Canton is not excluded from these statistics, it has a good mixture of new homes that meet the 2012 code, and older homes that could benefit greatly from being brought up to these standards.
If your home was built around or before the 1980's, chances are that your home is ready for an insulation retrofit!
Don't get by anymore Canton! Does your home have a particularly cold room during the winter? How about feeling a breeze tickle your arm while you're inside, near a certain door or window? These are common signs that your insulation has deteriorated to the point of being ineffective, or is not present at all!
We have gotten calls from surprised homeowners who have removed drywall, only to find that there is nothing inside their walls! So what do we recommend? We do have a variety of insulation available so that the customer always has options! But in our opinion, the best insulation is Cellulose! Its our top performing insulation and here's why...
Why Cellulose is the Best Insulation for a Canton Home
Starting with its creation, cellulose begins as recycled paper, usually and primarily newspaper, which has been shredded until fiberized, meaning that its broken down into fibers. It then undergoes treatments that accomplish various purposes.
Borates are added to increase fire resistance and also to kill insects. Borate treated cellulose insulation achieves the highest fire rating, a Class 1 fire rating. Even though it is made from paper, cellulose insulation treated with borates and installed into walls, is excellent for stopping the *initial* spread of fires.
Cellulose insulation, because of its recycled nature, is highly affordable. Its more affordable than even fiberglass, the former tried-and-true choice across Canton, Ohio, and America. Cellulose insulation has additional benefits in subzero temperatures, which Canton Ohio is graced with every couple of winters, cellulose will gain R-value as temperatures drop below zero, but fiberglass will lose R-value as temperatures go subzero.
- Cellulose Loose Fill - It can be installed as a loose fill insulation placed on top of unconditioned attic floors – by the way: the attic is the number one spot to insulate if you don't have any insulation, heat rises! For this type of installation, we put the cellulose into a grinding machine to thoroughly break up the compact block, and then we use a blowing machine to completely cover the floor of the unconditioned attic, to a depth of about 15 inches. The rafters will be well below the top of the insulation, and we aim for an R-value of 49 – as recommended for the State of Ohio. Fifteen inches of cellulose is more than enough depth to account for any settling over time due to the effects of gravity. This is unavoidable, so we always make sure to use extra so that your home loses no protection!
- Cellulose Blown Insulation - It can also be blown into the hollow cavities of walls, with added pressure, called dense packing. 3.5lbs per square foot is the perfect amount of pressure to cause the insulation to compact onto itself, completely filling in air gaps, and ensuring that the insulation stays perfectly in place for up to 20 years, before some sagging may occur. Cellulose insulation can be placed into walls that already contain fiberglass too! Its called: Cellulose Over Fiberglass, pretty self-explanatory! We blow cellulose insulation into walls, right on top of your fiberglass. This has been studied and shown to be a very effective way to retrofit a home with older and present insulation!
To insulate the inside of the walls, we must drill
We drill as few holes as possible and often only require one hole to insulate each entire 8-foot high section because our hoses are able to reach every available space. Where we access the wall depends on the design of your home, specifically, do you have brick on the outside of your home?
- If brick is present - we need to insulate the walls of your home from the inside. A working space will be made inside, near the wall, large objects and furniture covered with plastic clothes, and we will move smaller objects like end tables, etc, to another room. We will drill through the drywall inside to access the hollow stud cavities. Holes will be mudded and sanded flat. The patched areas will only need a touch of paint applied by the homeowner. All drop cloths and debris will be cleaned up , we will uncover the large furniture, and move smaller items back into the room.
- If your home has traditional siding or panels - we can simply remove them, and then drill into your walls through the wood underneath the siding, as pictured above. We will apply patches to the areas where we drill to contain the insulation and then replace the siding. Drop cloths will be placed on the ground, over any plants, and secured to the side of the home to collect stray sawdust and insulation.
Customer Choice is top priority
We have talked so much about our favorite insulation (It's Cellulose!) that customers may think that we don't offer other types! Customers choice is always a top priority at Unified Insulation. Many like fiberglass! If that's your selection, we offer it as fiberglass batting, and loose fill fiberglass for attic spaces.
Fiberglass batts can also be used in basements during furnishing and installing studwalls, but it runs into moisture issues when used as a crawlspace insulation, so we cannot recommend fiberglass in a crawlspace.
For crawlspaces we recommend spray foam, but be warned, spray foam is not to be used just anywhere! (we have a blog about companies that want to put foam in your walls and cover your attic with it, check out our Hit Piece: Spray Foam)
