Our Favorite Insulation – Why we love Cellulose and why its best the best insulation for Cleveland Ohio

Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper that has been shredded and 'fiberized'.  Because of its renewed lifespan as a recycled product, its highly affordable, costing about half as much as fiberglass insulation – the former tried and true king of insulation and the most 'Green' of all Insulation.  Cellulose insulation is also factory treated with borates to repel critters, reduce external sound, and to be in the top-rated tier of fire resistance, Class 1!  Can you see why its our favorite insulation yet?

The homes in Cleveland can stand to benefit particularly from this insulation when used as loose fill attic insulation, and as blown insulation placed into hollow cavities inside walls.  Because Cleveland winters are so cold, the climate itself must be taken into account as well.  Fiberglass at sub-zero temperatures will lose R-value, while cellulose will increase in R-value!

Taking it even one step further... this insulation can be installed into sidewalls with added pressure – called dense packing, which will drive the product into every nook and crevice possible, completely stopping air gaps and providing additional R-value of 13.6 in a 2x4 wall.  We achieve a density of 3.5lbs per square foot, which is the amount required to stop air gaps from allowing outside air to flow into the home and to compact the insulation to suitable levels, this avoids sagging for up to 20 years!

So if you see photos on competitors sites, where the cellulose insulation doesn't go around a little pipe, know that they're made to fool consumers, don't be fooled!  Dense pack cellulose insulation will blast into every space available and then compact onto itself with added pressure for even more insulating ability and longevity!

But wait, there's so much more!

Cellulose insulation can be installed directly on top of fiberglass insulation that is already inside walls - This is known as re-insulating or retrofitting insulation and is called: Cellulose over Fiberglass.  Many studies have shown that this is an effective way to bring back the R-value of a home with older insulation, while also keeping your re-insulation costs to a minimum!

How is dense pack cellulose in walls different from loose fill cellulose in attics?

Loose fill cellulose in an attic is easy enough to wrap your mind around, its a blanket of loose material on the attic floor, that traps inside temperatures in the living spaces of the home...but how can Unified Insulation get cellulose into my walls?

We have to drill small holes.  First, we'll need to assess the style of home: whether it is brick faced, has siding, or has paneled siding.  In the case of homes with siding or paneling, we're able to access the inside of the wall cavities from the outside of the home.  We cannot recommend insulation through brick surfaces, instead we would need to set up a work zone inside of the home and access the hollow cavities via the drywall-side indoors.

We will install drop cloths, whether insulating from outside or inside, to catch debris and make clean up easier, as well as to protect your large objects and furniture.  Then we'll begin drilling holes into your stud cavities, with special attention given to areas around windows and doors.  Guided by our thermal cameras, your insulation will go right where you need it, and stay there for decades!  We usually only need one hole drilled per 8 foot section, our hoses are able to reach any spaces inside from here.

Once complete, we will patch the holes (and mud them if insulating your home from the inside), replace your siding, clean up all of our drop clothes and then wipe off surfaces!  Only a small paint touch up over the patches is required by the owner.  You'll notice the lack of outside sounds immediately and see the savings on your next energy bills!
