FIVE signs that your home insulation is not enough

Wintertime is when most people realize that their home insulation is no longer up to the task of keeping them comfortable

Five signs that your home insulation is not enough - By Unified Insulation Systems

When Ohio residents notice a temperature difference in certain rooms, feel drafty or cold spots in the home, its time to consider your insulation, and whether it may require an update.  And these are just two of the warning signs, we're going to go over the FIVE signs that your residential insulation may not be at its best performance.

Some of the benefits of reinsulating are that it: provides a more pleasant indoor environment, dampens outdoor sounds entering the home, and can even help your allergies!  Did we mention that energy bills will be less expensive??  This is often the number one driver for homeowners looking to reinsulate their home, the cost savings!

Here are 5 warning signs that your insulation may not be sufficient:

Drafts and cold spots that bring outdoor allergens into the home

  • A home is made to be able to breathe, letting air and vapors escape from venting and bringing new air inside the home regularly via the HVAC.  However, when air gaps allow more air into the home than it should have, a draft occurs, and cold or stuffy rooms are the result.  Its a hole in an otherwise perfect system, and that hole lets in cold or hot outside air that brings with it allergens. Insulation and weatherization seal up these holes, which relieves the air circulating into the home, saving those inside who suffer from hay fever, allergies, and asthma.

High energy bills from a furnace or AC struggling to keep up

  • If you're noticing your energy bills trend upward during the coldest winter months, it may be that your home's insulation is not thick enough to keep those inside its thermal envelope warm.  This also applies during the heat of the summer, if your AC is on all the time, it is adding more and more costs onto your energy bill.  Insulation that has settled, been displaced, or has been damaged, should be replaced or updated to keep those inside comfortable during every season.

A home built around the 80s

  • While the 80's are known for their Hair Bands and great music, the residential construction codes were not so great. Building codes didn't require insulation and as a result, many contractors didn't use it because it would only cut into costs.  This makes homes made before the 80's particularly vulnerable to the hottest and coldest months.  If you own an older home, its worth the call to Unified Insulation for a free inspection with our Flir Thermal Imaging System. We will show you just where the weak spots in your home insulation are, and our plan to update your insulation, along with a quote for that plan.

Melting snow and ice formation on the roof

  • When attic insulation is not sufficient to trap heat and keep it inside, the heat escapes via the roof and can cause snow to melt. You can see which homes have enough attic insulation with a winter drive through your neighborhood, look at the rooftops and see if there is a melted spot! Melted snow running off of your roof, refreezes when it hits the eaves (the roof edges that hang over the side of the home), forming ice dams. Ice dams can be dangerous, they're heavy, and can cause roof damage. They're also a flashing warning sign that your attic insulation is insufficient!

Outside noises distracting those inside

  • Insulation has a few hidden benefits, and absorbing outside sounds is one of them!  Fiberglass, Cellulose, and Block Foam all absorb and dissipate sound waves entering the home so that you can have peace of mind when indoors.

If your home fits into any of these five categories, its worth the call to Unified Insulation to set up your free quote and thermal camera inspection!  Our team believes in a no-pressure approach, this is a decision for your family and home.
